Communication Kits (Comms)

Please note the following guidance as outlined by the FA Referee Department.

The Football Association (The FA) wishes to formally confirm that the use of communications equipment for match officials has been approved for extension to the Step 2 refereeing group, as well as for use in the National League - North and South competitions.

In collaboration with the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), the use of this equipment will also be extended to referees who are part of the National Development Group. This is in line with the Elite Referee Development Plan, where one of the key criteria for performance monitoring is the use of match-day communication in matches and may include matches refereed by Development Group referees operating at Step 3/4 as these referees sit outside the traditional pathway, their performance is not included within the merit table and does not impact on the merit table position of their peers.

For the Women’s game, Communication kits can be worn on Tier 1 and Tier 2 competitions or on games refereed by Development Group referees.

Please be advised that the use of communications equipment outside of these specified competitions, and in contexts beyond the Professional Game, will require prior approval from The FA Refereeing Department.

Vanishing Spray

Please note the following guidance as outlined by the FA Referee Department

The Football Association (The FA) confirmed that Vanishing Spray is NOT allowed to be used below games involving Step 2. Officials operating at Step 3 and below are not allowed to wear / use vanishing spray.
